T: TV killed the Writing Star

We live in a world of distractions. TV, internet, smart phones, constant news feeds, twitter, Facebook. We watch TV, tweet and play on Facebook all at the same time. We are innundated with information, and yet we listen more. When was the last time you truly listened in a conversation without looking at your phone or at least thinking about it?

I am guilty of it as well; I am anything but a saint with this.

The issue that I as a writer find is that these distractions kill my ability to focus and write. Oh wait, I can't write yet, I haven't checked my phone in 5 minutes. Oh, I'll watch that TV show and then I'll write. Yeah, we all know how that goes.

You see and read about it all over the place. Turn off the TV and write. Go to a place where you won't be distracted. The tips are endless and the advice is all the same.

I have to admit, it's difficult to do. We live in a world of noise. We multi-task constantly. When I come home after a long day, I just want to sit on the couch and not think. This is just what we have allowed our lives to become.

The sad part is, technology has killed (or is killing) many art forms, writing included. Television shows and movies are anything but original. People don't read full news articles any more. They watch videos or just read quick excerpts. As long as there are pictures, people will look. A reader is more likely to read a blog with pictures than something that is picture-less.

People don't read like they used to. Books on tape/CD/MP3 are all the rage as are e-books. Why? Because it is easier to listen (or read while on Facebook)than to sit down and thoroughly enjoy a book.

It saddens me, really. I hate to see such a decline in my favorite form of art. It kills me to know that as hard as I work to write, most people want the abridged version. Length is frightening to people nowadays.

What does this mean for me as a writer and the industry as a whole? Honestly, I'm not sure. I fear that the future of writing is short. I fear that the craft will die. But, I won't allow myself to be a part of that decine. My hope is that with my effort, and the efforts of other writers, we can revive our craft. Perhaps we can help it to renew and rise up like a phoenix.

So readers, please keep reading. And we die-hard writers will keep writing! :)

Getting Personal With My Readers

Happy Thursday, everyone! :)

If you're my friend on Facebook, you know a lot about me.

You know where I am with my wedding planning.

You know when the pizza has arrived to our house for dinner.

You even know when I have a migraine.

Though this may not seem important or relevent to selling books, I have found that it does in fact help.

You see, you are all involved in my life. I post polls about things relating to my wedding. I post pictures of our puppies. You see that I am human. I am approachable.

Am I a reclusive writer? Absolutely! However, I have also let all of my readers in to my life. And I have shown them that as reclusive as I may be, I am not completely anti-social.

I think it's important for readers to be able to connect with writers. If I want you to read my books, why not let you know the person behind the words.

Would you trust a doctor more if you never met them?

Or would you trust them if they spent time with you, talking with you and working with you?

I would hope it would be the latter.

Personally, I believe the same applies to us writers.

If you see just how much I love my dogs, you might just want to read my stories where pets are an integral part of the story.

If you can relate to my wedding madness, you will more likely be able to relate to my characters who are either like me, or are going through wedding madness of their own.

Do I apologize for posting my personal information? Not really. I have connected with readers from across the country, and even across the globe. I hope that I can (or perhaps I already have) connect(-ed) with you! Come get to know me! You might just want to read my books, too! ;)

Happy reading! :)

Character Interview: Tony

Good Friday morning, y'all! I am QUITE wiped out from writing, interviews and prepping for TOMORROW'S book signing in Suffern, NY and then Sunday's interview on Wake Up America. I'll post the info on those at the end of this blog.

Today's character interview is with Tony from Unbreakable Hostage.

Good morning, Tony.

Hi.

Tony, let's just jump right in here. You are not well-liked because of your role in the story. What would you like to say in your defense?

I did nothing wrong. She turned me down - she needed to see what a great guy I am. The police have no right to take me away from my wife like that! I will appeal this to the highest court!

Tony, your brother calls you a perpetual student. How does that make you feel?

Well, he's right. I've taken an infinite number of classes. I have all kinds of degrees. I just haven't found my nitche in life yet. I guess I'm a late bloomer. But Lareina understands that. She accepts me as I am.

Let's talk about Lareina for a minute.

You tried to kill her; you raped her; you stalked her, and you kidnapped her. She fought you; she hid from you, and she used her cell phone to get rescued from you. Do you really believe that you have any kind of healthy relationship with her - or anyone for that matter?

Women just need to be controlled some times. She's Hispanic, and those women are fiesty. They just need a good man to put them in their place. And she understands why I am as hurt as I am. I explained all the problems my family went through. She understands. And she loves me. I know she does.

Tony, your time is extremely limited due to prison regulations. This is your chance to explain yourself and possibly even gain some sympathy.

I am a good guy. I would never hurt anyone. I just did what I needed to do. Lareina was very weak and sick, and thus delirious by the time the police found us. I know that she is working hard to be reunited with me. I'm incredibly smart and I am a good husband. That's all you need to know.

Ok, Tony. Thanks.

To read more about Tony, Lareina and everyone else in Unbreakable Hostage check out the book on amazon.com and barnes and noble.com. It's available in e-book, Kindle AND print!

If you're in NY or northern NJ, please stop by the Raider Book Store in Suffern, NY on Saturday (4/17) at 2 pm! I will be there reading excerpts, signing books and giving away a ONE-OF-A-KIND Unbreakable Hostage prize! It's REALLY cool! I'd love to see you there!

Just in time for the new year!

Good morning, world! :) Today, I have a VERY exciting announcement!

No, I'm not getting married. That would be...Well, illegal! LOL.

No, I'm not pregnant. That would be...Well, impossible! LOL

No, the news I have is...Starting February 1st, 2010, I will RESUME my on-line book club discussions. Those will be held the first of every month and I will host them on here, on my myspace page and my facebook page as well!

In conjunction with that, I will also resume my Ask the Author day. That is the opportunity you have to ask me anything you want regarding my books, characters, writing, writing style, voice, etc. Unless it's personal, no question goes unanswered! :) Again, those will be held here, on myspace and on facebook. Those will take place on the 15th of every month!

I will also do a Quote of the Month. Those will be done on the last day of every month. They will be excerpts from my various works. Some will be longer than others, but they'll all give you just a tase of my books. ;) Those can be found on all 3 sites as well.

Last but not least, I will have occasional interviews with other writers! GASP! I know! :) I am going to start with some of my fellow VHP authors and go from there. There is no set schedule for those as we all lead fairly hectic lives and I'll post them when I have them. I think it's important for the writing community to support each other. As well, for my fellow writers out there, this is an opportunity for you to learn from some absolutely incredible authors. These are some of the best of the best! So enjoy those! I will be sure to make announcements as the interviews come up! :)

So, I guess you can call that my new year's resolution. It is for writing & work, anyhow. ;)

So happy new year, folks! Be safe. I'll catch ya next year! ;)
