T: TV killed the Writing Star

We live in a world of distractions. TV, internet, smart phones, constant news feeds, twitter, Facebook. We watch TV, tweet and play on Facebook all at the same time. We are innundated with information, and yet we listen more. When was the last time you truly listened in a conversation without looking at your phone or at least thinking about it?

I am guilty of it as well; I am anything but a saint with this.

The issue that I as a writer find is that these distractions kill my ability to focus and write. Oh wait, I can't write yet, I haven't checked my phone in 5 minutes. Oh, I'll watch that TV show and then I'll write. Yeah, we all know how that goes.

You see and read about it all over the place. Turn off the TV and write. Go to a place where you won't be distracted. The tips are endless and the advice is all the same.

I have to admit, it's difficult to do. We live in a world of noise. We multi-task constantly. When I come home after a long day, I just want to sit on the couch and not think. This is just what we have allowed our lives to become.

The sad part is, technology has killed (or is killing) many art forms, writing included. Television shows and movies are anything but original. People don't read full news articles any more. They watch videos or just read quick excerpts. As long as there are pictures, people will look. A reader is more likely to read a blog with pictures than something that is picture-less.

People don't read like they used to. Books on tape/CD/MP3 are all the rage as are e-books. Why? Because it is easier to listen (or read while on Facebook)than to sit down and thoroughly enjoy a book.

It saddens me, really. I hate to see such a decline in my favorite form of art. It kills me to know that as hard as I work to write, most people want the abridged version. Length is frightening to people nowadays.

What does this mean for me as a writer and the industry as a whole? Honestly, I'm not sure. I fear that the future of writing is short. I fear that the craft will die. But, I won't allow myself to be a part of that decine. My hope is that with my effort, and the efforts of other writers, we can revive our craft. Perhaps we can help it to renew and rise up like a phoenix.

So readers, please keep reading. And we die-hard writers will keep writing! :)

Is Hollywood Killing Literature?

We ALL love a good movie. And since Hollywood first began, they have taken some of the greatest pieces of literature and turned them into moving pictures. Gone With the Wind, The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men...the list is endless.

Nowadays, though, times have changed. How many of us have seen movies to books that we never read? I'll admit I'm guilty of that. Sat through the Twilight series, never read the books. It was all for the Mrs. ;)

We live in a world of instant gratification. A phone call will no longer do. Now we must tweet. Drive through wedding chapels, electronic everything, you name it. We are more inclined to sit through a two hour movie than we are to read a book.

Now I'll admit that I would LOVE to see my books become movies, reach a broader audience, etc. That's why I LOVE storycasting.com. Fantastic site that lets my imagination play! :) BUT, if my books do turn into movies, I want them to be true to the books. There will not be any exploding cars in Imperfect. If there are, that ain't my book.

If my books became movies, though, would I see people flock to get their copies or would Hollywood simply be the only focal point? I don't know. But I will admit that the idea of my books losing their clout is scary. I write with intention. I hope that actually comes across.

So, is Hollywood killing literature? I think it's a possibility. I would like to see the two art forms help and support each other. Hopefully our society isn't becoming completely anti-literature.

Don't forget, everyone, I'm about to start my next big tour. I'll be posting & tweeting my various stops along the way. I hope to see you there, and I hope you pick up your copy of Imperfect while we're at it too! :)

Happy reading!

Just in time for the new year!

Good morning, world! :) Today, I have a VERY exciting announcement!

No, I'm not getting married. That would be...Well, illegal! LOL.

No, I'm not pregnant. That would be...Well, impossible! LOL

No, the news I have is...Starting February 1st, 2010, I will RESUME my on-line book club discussions. Those will be held the first of every month and I will host them on here, on my myspace page and my facebook page as well!

In conjunction with that, I will also resume my Ask the Author day. That is the opportunity you have to ask me anything you want regarding my books, characters, writing, writing style, voice, etc. Unless it's personal, no question goes unanswered! :) Again, those will be held here, on myspace and on facebook. Those will take place on the 15th of every month!

I will also do a Quote of the Month. Those will be done on the last day of every month. They will be excerpts from my various works. Some will be longer than others, but they'll all give you just a tase of my books. ;) Those can be found on all 3 sites as well.

Last but not least, I will have occasional interviews with other writers! GASP! I know! :) I am going to start with some of my fellow VHP authors and go from there. There is no set schedule for those as we all lead fairly hectic lives and I'll post them when I have them. I think it's important for the writing community to support each other. As well, for my fellow writers out there, this is an opportunity for you to learn from some absolutely incredible authors. These are some of the best of the best! So enjoy those! I will be sure to make announcements as the interviews come up! :)

So, I guess you can call that my new year's resolution. It is for writing & work, anyhow. ;)

So happy new year, folks! Be safe. I'll catch ya next year! ;)

Writing and Websites

Ok, so this will not be as "juicy" as the past few blogs, but it still needs to be written nonetheless.

I have multiple websites and profiles. I have 2 websites; 3 myspace profiles; a facebook profile; a twitter page; this blog; several writing profiles/forums; all of my modeling profiles, and multiple e-mail addresses. Yes, I spend my day glued to my computer up-dating everything, doing guest spots on various blogs and so on.

The internet is a HUGE resource for us writers. Why? Because we can literally reach the world with our books. We never know who is looking at our profiles or blogs. Someone you may never meet could buy your book simply by seeing your profile. The internet is a writer's best friend.

Though I like to consider myself a somewhat active soul (I love to be doing SOMETHING at all times. I get bored too easily), a huge portion of my life is dedicated to typing on my keyboard. It's not a glamorous life, but if it gets me sales and exposure I am all for it! :)

So, yeah I "work" a lot. Believe it or not, it gets quite monotonous. Plus when one has a cat that likes to eat computer wires such as myself, computer problems can throw a huge monkey wrench in my work. Thus, the fear of my cat keeps me attached to this machine far more than I care to admit.

The other great thing about the internet is being a guest blogger, doing blog tours or getting your work highlighted by other bloggers. I've been a guest on a few different blogs, and I'm continuing to do that. In addition, I try to get my work featured on various blogs. For example, on Dec. 13, Loving Her will be featured on http://whispersofthemuse.org/AuthorSpotlight/SpotlightFrame.html
for holiday shopping (I will be listed along with several other writers). In 2010, sneak peeks at Unbreakable Hostage and Imperfect will be on there as well! The gal who runs that site is extremely nice and she has a wonderfully large audience, most of whom have never heard of me! Woo hoo! More exposure! It's like hitting the jackpot!

The internet is also fantastic because through my publisher, I have been given the WONDERFUL opportunity to participate in something called Operation E-book Drop. What is that? Well, it's a way for us writer folk to send special coupons for smashwords to send to troops all around the world so they can download our books and read them! If not for the internet and Operation E-book Drop, those troops would never even know I existed, let alone actually read my work!

So, fellow readers and writers, use this "fancy thinking box" as one of my favorite DJ's on WMMR (Philadelphia) says, to your advantage! The world literally sits in front of you! Don't let this resource go unused.

BTW, I currently cannot up-date my main website, leharvey.com due to an inability to access my ftp. Sorry, guys! I'm working on it! :)
