Books: A Dying Art?

Good morning, world! Well, we've all survived another new year. Still no armageddon. Sorry, folks! :)

This needs to be the year of writing, guys.

Let's face it: Writing is a dying art. Anyone can have a blog and call themselves a writer or a blogger. Print has been dying since late 2008. We saw how many newspapers - some of which were historical institutions - die with the bad economy. Why? Because we'd rather sit in front of our computers to read.

Trust me, I am ALL for saving trees. But I also know that there are so many alternatives for paper such as hemp (not pot people, HEMP). Hell, we could take a cue from the ancient Egyptians and create something along the same lines as papyrus. There's an idea!

My point is this: we have options to save writing and still have print without killing the environment.

We're not even reading books any more. We're reading stories on our computers or nifty little gadgets called Kindle. Don't get me wrong, e-books are currently the main bulk of my sales. But you can't curl up under a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate and a good Kindle. We ALL remember that great cozy feeling! Is there anything better than that?

Living in this digital age has separated us from human contact and from those feelings of warmth and reading good books. Now, we'll read something, see a flashing ad & go over there. We have allowed ourselves to have an attention span of about 2 seconds.

I miss books. I miss READING. I miss the feeling of a book in my hands. I spend so much time on my computer typing away. I would love nothing more than to curl up on my couch and read, or to get lost in a good story right before bed.

Let's do what we can to save our ancient roots as story tellers. We need print. We need our traditions and formats to stay. I look at our little three year old and wonder if she'll ever have the memories I have of just reading books, or will she be glued to a computer before she even turns 10. I don't want her to miss out on that. I don't want our society to lose its historical roots. I think we need to make this the year that our art form is revitalized and doesn't become a bunch of zeros and ones in the computer world.

We need to all come together as readers and writers to make 2010 the year that our art doesn't die!

Happy new year and happy reading!! :)

Just in time for the new year!

Good morning, world! :) Today, I have a VERY exciting announcement!

No, I'm not getting married. That would be...Well, illegal! LOL.

No, I'm not pregnant. That would be...Well, impossible! LOL

No, the news I have is...Starting February 1st, 2010, I will RESUME my on-line book club discussions. Those will be held the first of every month and I will host them on here, on my myspace page and my facebook page as well!

In conjunction with that, I will also resume my Ask the Author day. That is the opportunity you have to ask me anything you want regarding my books, characters, writing, writing style, voice, etc. Unless it's personal, no question goes unanswered! :) Again, those will be held here, on myspace and on facebook. Those will take place on the 15th of every month!

I will also do a Quote of the Month. Those will be done on the last day of every month. They will be excerpts from my various works. Some will be longer than others, but they'll all give you just a tase of my books. ;) Those can be found on all 3 sites as well.

Last but not least, I will have occasional interviews with other writers! GASP! I know! :) I am going to start with some of my fellow VHP authors and go from there. There is no set schedule for those as we all lead fairly hectic lives and I'll post them when I have them. I think it's important for the writing community to support each other. As well, for my fellow writers out there, this is an opportunity for you to learn from some absolutely incredible authors. These are some of the best of the best! So enjoy those! I will be sure to make announcements as the interviews come up! :)

So, I guess you can call that my new year's resolution. It is for writing & work, anyhow. ;)

So happy new year, folks! Be safe. I'll catch ya next year! ;)

Writing and Websites

Ok, so this will not be as "juicy" as the past few blogs, but it still needs to be written nonetheless.

I have multiple websites and profiles. I have 2 websites; 3 myspace profiles; a facebook profile; a twitter page; this blog; several writing profiles/forums; all of my modeling profiles, and multiple e-mail addresses. Yes, I spend my day glued to my computer up-dating everything, doing guest spots on various blogs and so on.

The internet is a HUGE resource for us writers. Why? Because we can literally reach the world with our books. We never know who is looking at our profiles or blogs. Someone you may never meet could buy your book simply by seeing your profile. The internet is a writer's best friend.

Though I like to consider myself a somewhat active soul (I love to be doing SOMETHING at all times. I get bored too easily), a huge portion of my life is dedicated to typing on my keyboard. It's not a glamorous life, but if it gets me sales and exposure I am all for it! :)

So, yeah I "work" a lot. Believe it or not, it gets quite monotonous. Plus when one has a cat that likes to eat computer wires such as myself, computer problems can throw a huge monkey wrench in my work. Thus, the fear of my cat keeps me attached to this machine far more than I care to admit.

The other great thing about the internet is being a guest blogger, doing blog tours or getting your work highlighted by other bloggers. I've been a guest on a few different blogs, and I'm continuing to do that. In addition, I try to get my work featured on various blogs. For example, on Dec. 13, Loving Her will be featured on http://whispersofthemuse.org/AuthorSpotlight/SpotlightFrame.html
for holiday shopping (I will be listed along with several other writers). In 2010, sneak peeks at Unbreakable Hostage and Imperfect will be on there as well! The gal who runs that site is extremely nice and she has a wonderfully large audience, most of whom have never heard of me! Woo hoo! More exposure! It's like hitting the jackpot!

The internet is also fantastic because through my publisher, I have been given the WONDERFUL opportunity to participate in something called Operation E-book Drop. What is that? Well, it's a way for us writer folk to send special coupons for smashwords to send to troops all around the world so they can download our books and read them! If not for the internet and Operation E-book Drop, those troops would never even know I existed, let alone actually read my work!

So, fellow readers and writers, use this "fancy thinking box" as one of my favorite DJ's on WMMR (Philadelphia) says, to your advantage! The world literally sits in front of you! Don't let this resource go unused.

BTW, I currently cannot up-date my main website, leharvey.com due to an inability to access my ftp. Sorry, guys! I'm working on it! :)
