Valentine WeWriWa: Maria and Stephania

It's Saturday night, which can mean only one thing: WeWriWa! This month, to celebrate the Valentine's Day and love, we will be reading excerpts from my group of interwoven short stories, the Loving Her series. Each weekend, we will get a sneak peek into the love and lives of the four couples. So, without further ado, let's WeWriWa!

Click www.wewriwa.com for more information and to see other 8 Sentence Sunday posts.

This post is part of an ongoing blog hop hosted by Weekend Writing WarriorsEvery Sunday, participating authors post eight to ten sentences from a published work or even a WIP (work in progress). Then we hop to our fellow warriors’ blogs and check out all the fabulous fiction that’s happening! It's a great way to meet readers, writers, and your next favorite book!  :)

Background on the excerpt: It's Maria and Stephania's first weekend away together as a couple. Maria is confused - struggling between the love of her deceased partner, and her new love with Steph.
Stephania has just come out of the bathroom of the hotel room wearing a beautiful nightgown. Maria is overcome, to say the least. Snippet in 10 sentences.

Maria’s jaw dropped and she lost her grip on the book. The air rushed out of her lungs.
Words – thoughts – escaped her. She was overwhelmed with emotion, and yet could not
understand what it was she was feeling. She was intrigued, she was afraid. She was exhilarated,
she was paralyzed. Her vision was blurred…from tears.
“Come here,” Stephania softly beckoned her.
Maria’s body felt heavier than lead. She could hardly breathe let alone move.

Valentine WeWriWa: Linda and Katie

Background on the excerpt: Linda and Katie are on their first date. They are both flying high with excitement, and riddled with anxiety. This excerpt has been edited to fit 10 sentences.

Katie could not believe that Linda was finally sitting across the table from her; it took every ounce of will power to not break out into giddy excitement.  Her chest was tight and she could feel her heart beating, but this she also felt as though she was flying; this was the greatest feeling in the world.
The waitress came over with their fajitas.
Linda looked down at her plate;  she began shaking her head.
“What?”
Linda chortled,  “This is not good first date food.”
“What do you mean?”  Katie asked, as she did, she looked up and saw a clump of lettuce and sour cream fall out the back of Linda’s fajita;  Katie laughed.
Linda said as she crunched down, “See?!”

“Well, I don’t mind;  I think you still look sexy,”  Katie winked.

Background on the excerpt: Everyone is celebrating Liz's debut as the new principal ballerina with the Pennsylvania Ballet, but Liz knows she couldn't have done it alone. So this is Liz's recognition and thanks to Jen...and then some. This excerpt has been (heavily) edited to fit 10 sentences.

Liz rose from her chair and walked over to Jen; she seamlessly turned Jen’s chair to face her, and then she knelt down. “Jen, we’ve been together for seven years now; I love you - I always have, I always will. If we can weather what we’ve been through so far, we can get through anything. I want to be with you for all time, I want to always take care of you; I want to savor every moment of life with you by my side. Will you marry me?”
With that, a small, black box appeared; Liz opened it, and inside was a beautiful, delicate solitaire diamond ring. Liz could hear the group gasp quietly, but her focus was solely on Jen.
“Yes!”
Liz smiled down at her, “I love you.”

“I love you…more,” Jen winked at her.

Last WeWriWa of 2015!

It's Saturday night, which can mean only one thing: WeWriWa! This month, to celebrate the holidays, we will be reading excerpts from my short story, First Christmas. First Christmas is a follow up to Pianissimo. Darryl has finally returned home, and he and Corinne are celebrating their first Christmas as a civilian couple. Unbeknownst to Darryl, Corinne is still very fixated on the story of Agnes and Margaret, so we get to see how they celebrate Christmas as well. So, without further ado, let's WeWriWa!

Background on the excerpt: We are reading Agnes' diary as she sums up Christmas, and the meaning of the holiday. Snippet in 10:

So many people struggle and try to find joy in their material possessions. For them, this purpose of this day is for them to acquire more things, and yet still feel empty inside. I am so fortunate to know better than that. It is wonderful to not be wrapped up in the intangible concepts of money and belongings. I should rather live in a full dairy barn with Margaret than to not have her but have an exorbitant amount of money and things. Holidays aren’t about things. They’re about people. The people we all know and love. The people in our lives whom we should celebrate. And I shall celebrate Margaret every day that I am alive.

Happy reading, happy holidays, and have a happy and blessed new year!

We are now watching Margaret and Agnes celebrate Christmas. They have just celebrated the holiday with Margaret's family. The two are having this discussion while heading off to bed.
Snippet in 9:

Margaret swished in place; her dress spun and twirled around her. “I love Christmas. I love our Christmases together."
“As do I,” Agnes quietly replied. “You know, the holiday is so much more than gifts. It reminds us to love, appreciate and care for those we hold dear. It reminds us to not think of self, but rather to focus on those around us. Every day, I thank God for you. Every Christmas, I am reminded of how wonderful you really are.”

It's still early in the day, Corinne and Darryl just sat down for breakfast. The reality of his presence, but the absence of the rest of their families is hitting Corinne.
Snippet in 9:

Darryl sat across from Corinne. It was strange celebrating the holiday without their families. She felt a pang of sadness and solitude, but she loved the fact that Darryl was home, and he always would be.
“You alright, babe?” He interrupted her thoughts.
“Yeah,” she smiled. “Happy that you’re home.”

He reached across the table and gently caressed her hand. “Me too.”

This is the opening of the story. It is early Christmas morning. Corinne is awake, enjoying the start of the day in solitude. Snippet in 8:

Corinne tightly held her coffee mug. It was forty two degrees out. Not cold enough for her. She pulled back the curtain and looked out the window. No white Christmas here. Not today, anyway. Corinne couldn’t help but to feel bummed by seeing green grass. It wasn’t anything like her childhood Christmases in Indiana.

Final WIP WeWriWa!

For this month, I am doing something I've never done before: snippets of an unpublished WIP. Up to this point, I've done samples of my work that are completed and available for purchase. For the month of November, I am giving you a sneak peek into a raw, unedited, incomplete piece. To boot, this is my first jab at a fantasy story.

So without further ado, let's WeWriWa!

The Tale of the Good Pirate, Robert (working title) is a story about a bird named Robert who fancies himself a pirate; he lives in a land called Locreya. It is the land of infinity: infinite possibilities, infinite opportunities, infinite positivity. Just as there is darkness in our world, there is darkness in Robert's world. It is a land called Mulrad. It is the land of misery, built on the tears of children. When three of his crew men are kidnapped and sent to Mulrad, Robert must find a way to save them, and to bring peace to both lands.

Background on the snippet: Desiree has been in Mulrad for a while. Robert sent her there to be his eyes and ears as he makes the way to rescue her and his three crew members. It was another miserable day in the land of misery, until it seemed the world was falling apart. A terrible earthquake and storm are ravaging Mulrad.

Snippet in 8:
Thunder started to crash. Never in my life have I heard such loud thunder.

Even louder, were the screams of the trees. They were horrible shrieks. They shouted, and I could feel it in the pit of my stomach. They were guttural, blood curdling, and deafeningly loud. They sounded like horrific screams from children – they broke my heart. These were the worst sound.

Robert and his crew overtook another ship (but they guided that captain and crew to safety first); they tore it apart. Now, are on the Purple River (the body of water separating Locreya from Mulrad), placing a large, wooden, vertical post (from the mast of the other ship) of some sort.

Snippet in 9:

Robert flew above Pegleg Pete guiding him. He was telling him to place a vertical post.
I couldn’t understand why we’d sink the mast of the boat in the water vertically to be used as a post. What kind of post? What for? My curiosity got the best of me. “What are you doing?”

Robert turned his little head. “Making our way in and out of Mulrad.”

Snippet in 9:

I looked down, and before me stood a small bird. He boasted a little green body, with a bright yellow face. He was small – not a tropical parrot. Nor did he resemble any wild birds I had ever seen. He was bigger than a parakeet. He was so unique, and so adorable. Then I noticed he wore an eye patch over his right eye. Like a pirate, but he had no hat or peg leg. He was an interesting, if not comical sight.

Background on the snippet: this is the introduction, where we get our first taste for life in Locreya.
Snippet in 9 sentences:

Somewhere in the highlands of Scotland, tucked between the rocky crags, and the curving rivers lies a small, dense little forest. Should you enter that forest, it won’t take you long to find Locreya. The sun drizzles in through the trees illuminating the lush, green path. And suddenly, something catches your eye. You see a small sparkle on the ground out of the corner of your eye. By the time you turn to see it, it’s gone. If you wait, though, if you are patient enough and take a big, deep breath in, you’ll see it again. You kneel down to see what this little sparkle could be. When it blinks for the third time, you see that it is simply a little fairy skipping her way down the path.

Halloween WeWriWa!

Happy Halloween! Today is the day for good scares. So, in keeping with October's tradition of all things frightening, I am once again sharing snippets from Pianissimo. What better way to celebrate Halloween than with a paranormal story?!

Background on the snippet: Corinne is going to do laundry when she suddenly sees the ghost of Agnes Walker.

Snippet edited to fit in 10 sentences:

Corinne brought a small load of laundry down the rickety stairs into the basement when something caught her eye. A figure stood by the old mangled piano. It was her – the woman from her dream and in those pictures: it was Agnes!
Tall and lean, and figure and her face were undeniable.
Slowly, Agnes turned to look at Corinne. Her face was wrinkled, yet regal; her hair was elegantly worn up; her clothes were an echo of days gone by. Her eyes grew wide and bright for a moment. “Margaret?” There was an unusual quality to her voice: a whisper, and yet a scream; clear, yet scratchy - hers was a voice like none Corinne had ever heard before.
Corinne stood, holding the laundry basket, unable to move.

Background on the snippet:
Corinne has just discovered the old, dilapidated piano in the basement of her new home while she waits for some service men to deliver a new washer and dryer.

Snippet edited to fit in 8 sentences:

She walked over to it. She could only imagine the beautiful music that had once been played on the old piece. She softly touched it. A burst of a cold sensation struck her hand and raced up her arm. Corinne immediately dropper her hand. The cold feeling was gone.
She was struck by a burst of energy while she continued to stare at the piano.
“Hello,” a man’s voice echoed down the stairs.

Corinne is washing the dishes when she hears someone speak. This isn't the first time this has happened. Her husband, Darryl, is deployed, though - she's alone in her house. So who is speaking to her?

Snippet edited to fit in 9 sentences:

There it was again. A voice - a strange voice. She couldn’t tell if it was a man or a woman speaking. It was almost like a scratchy whisper. It was very weird. It was like nothing she had ever heard before, and yet she couldn’t be sure she actually heard anything.
Maybe she hadn’t. Maybe it was just her imagination playing games with her. This isolation and solitude was definitely taking a toll on her; It was probably nothing more than that.

Halloween Scares for WeWriWa!

(Said with an Eastern European accent) Good evening!

Background on the snippet:
Corinne is having a dream that is more of a vision than anything else. This depiction is an image that will return to her again later on in the story.

Snippet in 9 sentences:

A tall, thin woman stood in the dark, her arm rested heavily on some kind of ledge – perhaps a bureau or other piece of furniture. It was too dark to tell. The moonlight slithered its way in through the window, shadowing her tall, lean figure on the wall. She didn’t move. She couldn’t move. Even if she could, she wouldn’t want to. The silence pierced her soul. The room sat mute, but the woman seemed tense and overwrought with the noise in her own mind.
Unable to breathe, unable to move, the woman stayed motionless; the furniture was the only thing

supporting her.
